May 28, 2005 Reed Shining for Select
Dewayne Reed is a young man of few words. The quick 6-foot-1, 175-pound combo guard from Houston's Wheatley High School doesn't need to be chatty because he lets his outstanding play on the basketball floor do all the talking. Reed has been lighting up the scoreboard for the Houston Select AAU program so far this spring, and a number of schools in the Big 12 Conference will be tracking his progress into the summer. "Things are going good," Reed said. "My shooting is good and we've been playing alright." Schools from the north and south of the Big 12 are paying close attention. Reed indicated that he's hearing the most from Texas A&M, Texas, Colorado, and Kansas, and other schools like Houston and Auburn have also been in contact. Texas A&M head coach Billy Gillespie and assistant Alvin Brooks both stopped by Wheatley High School for an in-school visit recently. "They're nice people," Reed said. "I like them." Reed also likes what Texas and Colorado have had to say as well. "Texas - it's a good school," Reed said. "Colorado - I like their program." Reed indicated that he'd like to stay close to home and want the opportunity to play right away as a freshman. He's been outstanding at both guard spots for Houston Select so far on the circuit as one of the team's leading scorers - something he was at the 4A level in the city of Houston this past season. "He's a quiet kid, but on the floor he's different," said Houston Select coach Greg Muse. "He's emotional when he needs to be emotional. But at the same time, he's a steady guy. As a point guard, he makes solid decisions and at the two, he can make shots." One thing Reed has been able to do on the circuit is show coaches he can be versatile. "With his high school team, they really play up and down and press and do those sorts of things," Muse said. "With us, he's got to play a little different style. Not that we play ball-control or anything, but we run more plays on offense. That shows coaches that he can do that as well." Reed will likely take his time in taking official visits and making his eventual decision, but he hopes to sign in the fall. Texas Hoops Analysis: Dewayne is a very quick and fast open court player who loves to get the ball and go full speed. He is tough to control in the open court, can really get into the paint and finish, sees the floor well, and is a very good ball handler. He can score when needed but also keeps his teammates involved. Obtained at www.texashoops.com |
