Jonathan Blake Obtained at www.texashoops.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ May 26, 2005 For the past few years, Jonathan Blake has willingly fit into the background. But now that he's moving into his senior season, the athletic 6-foot-8, 180-pound forward from Cy Springs High School is ready to move into the spotlight. Blake is taking new challenges head on. He is looking to take his game to a higher level while garnering college attention - something TexasHoops.com's #34 ranked player from the Class of 2006 is very appreciative the Houston Select AAU program has allowed him to do. "I've been with Houston Select since last year," Blake said. "It's been fun and it's a great opportunity to get seen by colleges. Houston Select is one of the best teams too, so it's been easy to get noticed." Blake has used the opportunity of playing with Houston Select to work on his game. As the squad plays in tournament after tournament, weekend after weekend, he's been able to see progress. "I've had some bad tournaments and some good tournaments, but they've mostly been good," Blake said. "I've played well. I haven't been shooting as much, and I've been going to the hole and drawing contact instead. I can still hit the three-point shot, but I've changed my game a little bit." As a result, Blake is getting noticed by college recruiters. He has relished the attention. "I'm hearing from colleges I've heard of and colleges I've never heard of," Blake said. "I just got a call from Wichita State, and Georgia Tech and Colorado State have been sending me a lot of letters." In fact, Wichita State has recently offered Blake a scholarship, and he's taken some time to learn more about the school and program from an old friend. "They have a player of ours who transferred from Marquette, Karon Bradley," Blake said. "I was talking to him the other day when we were playing ball at church. He said that their coach has been talking to him asking about me. I've read their media guide and it seems like a nice place." Don't necessarily think the Shockers are ahead though. Texas State has also offered a scholarship, and Blake also likes hearing from another program on his list. "I really want to go to Georgia Tech," Blake said. "They've got my major in engineering, and there I can also do some things in graphic design - I've always got a sketch pad with me. But no commitment yet from me - I'm still (open)." Blake described what he's looking for in a college environment and program. "I really want to go somewhere where I can lead them," Blake said. "I want that pressure. I'm also looking to go to school as far away as possible. I like taking on challenges and go somewhere where I haven't seen before and be on my own and have responsibilities. I want a place where I can call home and where I can graduate." Texas Hoops Analysis: Jonathan is a slashing, athletic wing who can put it on the floor and score in traffic. He has improved his perimeter shot with a smooth stroke out to the 3 point line. He is quick to the hole, is a good leaper, is a nice rebounder, runs the floor well and can finish on the break.
